5 Exciting Things to do in a Long Distance Relationship

5 fun things to do in a long distance relationship cover photo

Hello! I’m one of the owners of Setoftwo and the male human of the relationship. As a veteran long distance relationship practitioner I would like to help people who may benefit from my expertise in the subject. Today, we will be taking a look at fun and interesting things to do in a long distance relationship. I know how difficult it is when the person you love isn’t physically next to you and I want to give you some ideas of things you can do to make yourself feel closer to your long distance partner. These are all things that I’ve done in the past with my love and they gave us a sense of happiness.

I’d be so grateful if I was able to do more good with Setoftwo and helping others out there in the world; opposed to only selling cute couple jewelry. If anyone uses any of the ideas here in this article then please leave a comment below and tell me how it goes for you.

5. Facetime Dinner Date

A video call food date is something that can be really cute and one of the most fun things to do in a long distance relationship. When my girlfriend and I did this, it was with Spaghetti-Os that we each bought at the Dollar Tree. Her Grandma always made her Spaghetti-Os growing up so it is a food that’s special to her. And it was her suggestion that we both eat the same thing together over our usual Discord call and simultaneously watch an anime together. Us eating the same food together even though we were two thousand miles apart was something that made us feel happy. I already had plans that day to eat canned tuna or something like that but it’s fine, I jogged back to the Dollar Tree and spent $1.25 on a large can of Spaghetti-Os.

The logistics behind the date are up to y’all. You could each set up a table for yourself and decorate it how you’d want it to be on a real life dinner date. Maybe you would want to cook something extravagant that even Gordon Ramsey would approve of. It would be fun to cook food for yourself and also a serving for your partner, then feed it to the camera! After you’re finished playfully feeding the camera lens, you could then eat the food yourself. There’s just a bunch of cute ways that you could spin it, among the fun things to do in a long distance relationship, a dinner date is among the most creative.

4. Movie Night Screen Share

This one’s a classic when it comes to things to do in a long distance relationship; you should totally go have a movie night with your long distance partner, like, tonight. It’ll be more fun if you can both get onto a video call and do it but doing it over voice chat can be sufficient if that’s what you’re comfortable with. By the way, I recommend Discord or Skype for communicating with your partner. I’m totally not sponsored by either of them, but if you’re not using Discord at this point in time, what are you doing? Make sure that you guys both get enough snacks and drinks that will last you throughout the whole movie. But even if you run out, the good thing about this situation is that you can pause the movie to scavenge for food.

Pick something that you both want to watch. I understand that you might want to make your partner sit through three hours of Joe Dirt because it was the funniest thing you’ve ever seen ten years ago. She might be into romance or thrillers, and since you might be into comedy, maybe you can find a romantic comedy that works for the both of you. 50 First Dates is a pretty funny romantic movie, for example. My girl’s favorite movie is My Neighbor Totoro so you best believe that we’ve seen it together at least twice so far. I have yet to have her watch The Shawshank Redemption, my favorite movie, but I have been able to watch Forrest Gump with her which she hadn’t seen before meeting me.

If you’re video calling during the movie date, you will probably be looking to see how your partner is reacting to different scenes during the movie. This adds to the fun because it’s more like you’re watching a movie with them in person. Yeah, it’s still missing the part where your arms are around each other and you can feel one another’s warmth, but that’s just long distance relationships for you and we have to make the best with what we’ve got.

3. It Takes Two

It Takes Two is a video game that is played with two people and the gameplay relies on teamwork and communication which can put your relationship to the test. Hopefully it won’t be relationship ending or anything as gruesome as that, but I guess that depends on how good you guys are at dealing with conflict. The game requires teamwork to keep advancing so nothing can be accomplished without the other person’s help. As you can imagine, this can get quite frustrating especially when one person’s job is to hammer some nails into the wall but they instead decide to hammer your character into ground over and over again. And if one of you happens to not be in the same intellectual dimension as the other, you can expect for one of you to be doing a lot of explaining and hopefully be able to remain patient.

It Takes Two can also bring forth a compassionate side that you might not have seen from your partner when they tell you that you really aren’t that bad at the game as you fail to jump onto a rail for the 17th time. You may also take part in cute interactions from the two of you that you wouldn’t really get elsewhere. The only games that my love and I play together are League of Legends and Clicker Heroes and there aren’t many heartwarming moments to be had there. So when we hopped into It Takes Two together, it was a nice change of pace and something that we could enjoy together without asking the other why they weren’t farming enough or asking them to please stop dying in the bot lane.

2. Sleep on Call

This long distance relationship activity sounds counterproductive to the title of the article, but please hear me out. Yes, you won’t be awake to witness it happening with your partner, and sleeping isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but to some it is their favorite thing to do. The idea of doing so with the person you love, even though they may be over 1,000 miles away from you, is comforting and heartwarming. One way to spice up your sacred sleeping time and your long distance relationship in general is to arrange your sleeping times so that they align with each other.

Y’all don’t have to hang the phone up for the day when it comes time to hit the sack; you can continue it, indefinitely if you so please. One time I my partner and I had a call that lasted over a week, and I think only then it ended because on of us lost power or our phone died. Many of you probably already do this, but sleeping on call really is a nice way to bond with your lover, so give it a shot if this isn’t something that you do already.

This may even be a way to prepare yourselves for the times when you inevitably are sharing the same bed. You will be ready for window rattling snores, if there are any. There are times where one of you might wake up during the night and then be soothed by your person’s light breathing and fall back to sleep peacefully. When it comes to things to do in a long distance relationship, sleeping on a call together is one of the things that I would recommend the most.

1. Watch One Piece

Anime? Yes, the One Piece anime. Hear me out, 1,000+ episodes of anatomically incorrect and super-powered pirates with varying heights doing pirate things; with your significant other. Still doesn’t sound up your alley? Well, that’s just not an option because anyone who witnesses the greatness that is One Piece becomes hooked eventually. If it’s already such a great show to watch by yourself (which it is), then watching it with the person you love just makes it ten times better.

You’re already going to be bombarding your partner with One Piece happenings whether they watch it or not, you might as well just watch it together so you know what the heck they won’t ever shut up about. There are times while watching the show that you’ll feel sadness that you didn’t even feel at one of your close relative’s funerals; which is also another reason that you should watch it together so that you can experience these emotions together. It’s a long journey and worth every second (except a couple hundred of the slow episodes and most of the filler episodes).

Conclusion

It’s important to always to keep things spicy and keep your communication on point when in a long distance relationship. A long distance relationship is so much more susceptible to breaking down from a lack of communication than a regular one is. Keep trying new things and think outside the box to make it fun and you will never run out of things to do in a long distance relationship.
